Originally published at Indulgences. You can comment here or there. It seems that lately I have had Mary Janes on the brain. It’s been close to ten years since I had a Mary Jane on my foot, and back then I went a little overboard, and had entirely too many pairs.
I think I am ready though, this time I want to find the most perfect vintage inspired Mary Jane. Here are a few of my picks…..(I am especially smitten with the first and last pair!)

| Wooden Jewelry |

Originally published at Indulgences. You can comment here or there. I absolutely love wooden jewelry. The most simple piece of wooden jewelry can add a certain flare to an outfit like no other jewelry can. It can really bring together an outfit, giving many outfits a more natural looking, but can also look quite elegant.

| 1980’s Fashion Today |
[Feb. 21st, 2008|04:14 pm] |
Originally published at Indulgences. You can comment here or there. For the most part, the 1980’s were a wretched part of fashion history. All ideas of what looked good on the body went out the door as perms, tapered jeans and shoulder pads came in.
That being said, there was some good that came out of the 80’s. Colors were a huge part of it, from pastels, to neons, to bolds, everyone was obsessed with rich color, and no one was afraid to experiment. Using some 80’s inspiration (and not making the same mistakes twice!!) in our wardrobes can actually be a good thing! Just make sure to look for items that flatter your body. Don’t go too overboard with it either. Mix and match some 80’s items with more updated items for a fun, retro, carefree looking way of dress.

I nearly had a heart attack when I saw these shoes. I have been wanting a cute pair of T-strap shoes, and these are them. Look how lovely the white straps are lined with the gold. And that little circle buckle really finishes them off nicely. Perfection.
Maybe Santa can stop by my house early this year and deliver these lovely shoes to me.

Originally published at Indulgences. You can comment here or there. I put this little outfit together as inspiration. This is exactly what my Spring wardrobe needs to look like this year! I have always preferred Spring/Summer fashions over Fall/Winter, because of one little item…the lovely summer dress. That is pretty much all that my wardrobe consists of, and I still don’t have enough!
Aren’t those Betsey Johnson shoes to die for?? Unfortunately the site says they are sold out, but I must find a way to own them!!

| Ghost World: How to Dress Like Enid |
[Feb. 13th, 2008|11:44 am] |
Originally published at Indulgences. You can comment here or there. Ghost World has been one of my favorite movies since it came out in 2001. Based on the graphic novel by Daniel Clowes, every bit of this movie is fun, quirky, and hilarious. As a newly graduated high school student in 2001, I identified perfectly with Enid’s character and envied her carefree sense of dress.
So how can one achieve the youthful, and slightly off kilter look of Thora Birch’s character? Easy!
♥ A black bob haircut is a must.
♥ Glasses are the ultimate accessory. Buddy Holly style is the way to go, though anything with rhinestones are perfect!
♥ Shop for tees in the little boys section of your thrift store. Look for old cartoons or other quirky subjects.
♥ Combat boots complete every Enid outfit.
♥ Shirt dresses are easy, comfortable, and especially great in vintage prints.

| The Labyrinth |
[Feb. 3rd, 2008|02:55 pm] |
Originally published at Indulgences. You can comment here or there. The movie the Labyrinth was a very defining movie in my life. It was my favorite all throughout my childhood, and it was the first time (that I knew of) that I was exposed to a man in makeup, though I later found out that Grandma’s friend Jackie was actually Jack.
I am honestly obsessed with every single bit of this movie, from the sets, to the music, to the costumes, to the puppets, to David Bowie’s package, it is all fabulous! The mid 80’s really did well with the fairy tale type fantasy movies. They just don’t make them like this anymore.
Being as in love with this movie as I was, I spent much time fantasizing being Sarah. What little girl growing up in the 80’s couldn’t relate to her, and daydream of going on a mystical adventure like she had?
Besides being a great storyline, the movie had some darn good fashion. Can’t we all use a little more Labyrinth in our lives? I dream of one day owning this outfit, because I would love nothing more than to walk down the street looking like Jareth the Goblin King!

1. Top from Forever 21 2. Trousers from Top Shop 3. Crystal Ball Necklace from Alloy 4. Shoes from Zappos 5. Vest from Top Shop
The Labyrinth also kicked off my life long secret love affair with David Bowie. Shh…don’t tell my husband.

Originally published at Indulgences. You can comment here or there. I love that reusable shopping bags are becoming more widely used. Not only are they wonderful for our planet, but it’s one more way to look and feel stylish. I am completely obsessed with finding the most perfect of perfect reusable shopping bags, and though these are a bit smaller than most shopping bags, they are fabulous! They would be the most perfect size for all your fruits and veggies.

| Everyone Loves Ruffles! |

My tips for rocking the ruffles:
♥ Stick to ruffles in only one or two articles of clothing. For example, don’t mix an overly ruffle top with a way too ruffly skirt, that is unless you are Carmen Miranda.
♥ Don’t overdo the ruffles and prints. Most of the time ruffles look best in a solid print, or a print that is not too busy.
♥ Unless you want to look like a cupcake try to avoid too much light pink and purple ruffles. For the right situation however, is fun to look like a cupcake!
♥ Try to keep a good form beneath the ruffles. Yes there are a few really cute shift type ruffle dresses, but these ruffles can add bulk, and are very hard to wear on anything above stick thin. Instead try a fitted top and a ruffle skirt like the one above. |

Let me just say that I am completely infatuated with these shoes from Top Shop. I have been seeing the gladiator style sandal everywhere these days, and this is a fun take on that trend. I love the little wedge on these, and they look incredibly comfortable. These would look great with a little bohemian style summer dress.

| Black and Blue |
[Jan. 17th, 2008|03:23 pm] |
Originally published at Indulgences. You can comment here or there. Somewhere in the past few weeks since the new year, I became completely obsessed with the black and blue color combo. It is really quite a classic combo, but I think I went overload in the blue department a while back, and haven’t included it in much of my wardrobe.
I did pick up some gorgeous royal blue colored tights recently, and am totally in love with them. I think I am a bit more into wearing black, and accessorizing with blue, than vice versa. What are your favorite color combos of the moment?

| Style Icon Grace Kelly |
[Jan. 16th, 2008|10:24 am] |
Originally published at Indulgences. You can comment here or there. “You know, I just love Grace Kelly. Not because she was a princess, not because she was an actress, not because she was my friend, but because she was just about the nicest lady I ever met. Grace brought into my life as she brought into yours, a soft, warm light every time I saw her, and every time I saw her was a holiday of its own. No question, I’ll miss her, we’ll all miss her, God bless you, Princess Grace.”
-Jimmy Stewart

There are few women that can pull off true glamor with such ease and elegance as Grace Kelly could. Whether she was going to a Hollywood event or walking the dog, Princess Grace was able to execute her outfits in such a way that her clothes looked as if they were an extension of her skin. Kelly’s look was one of simple elegance. She wore clean, classic pieces, and though she loved her accessories, was never one to overdo an outfit.
After an all too short lived acting career and marrying Prince Rainer in 1956, Grace Kelly became an international fashion icon. As the princess of Monaco she spread her keen eye for dress all over the globe, and becoming especially popular throughout Europe. Women flocked to shops trying to emulate the classic look of Princess Grace.
So how can we add a little bit of Grace Kelly into our daily wardrobes? Look for simple, clean lines in clothing. Nothing too over the top. Something that fits and flatters will make a bigger splash than something with loud prints and wild colors. Your hair must be made to look its best at all times. Hot rollers are great for giving your hair the nice soft bounce that Kelly had. Accessorizing an outfit is a must, things such as pearls, gloves, and head scarfs give elegance with your own personal flare to an outfit.
To truly channel your inner Grace Kelly though, walk with pride, dignity, and confidence. Don’t be sucked into fashion trends that come and go with each season. Follow what you know suits your body, and can be worn for many years, without looking dated.

In the days before tanning beds and orange skin, pail skin was all the rage in Hollywood. That look needs to make a come back.

Well tailored, high waisted pants give the appearance of a pinched waist, and most importantly, avoids the dreaded muffin top, and the disturbing plumber’s crack.

This dress is very classic, but with the one shoulder gives it a sexy, more modern appeal.

Solid colors and classic shapes can easily be made over for any decade. The accessories you choose can transform it into a more timely outfit.

Even in casual attire Grace manages to dazzle with her perfectly shaped hair, and her radiant personality. |

| Wardrobe Basics: How to Build a Better Closet |

If you are like me you have a closet (or several) stuffed to the brim, yet finding an outfit is a constant struggle. There are some days when I feel I have absolutely nothing to wear, but the cloths strewn about would prove otherwise.
The truth of the matter is that I don’t have a strong foundation in my closet. I have a lot of lovely pieces, but they are hard to mix and match. With a little bit of guidance we can all build strong wardrobes, and never be left with nothing to wear again.
♥ Proper undergarments. A bra is their for lift and support. It should fit comfortably, and the center should rest flat on your chest. Go to a shop and be sized. Try on several bras under your shirt. A good bra will make any outfit look more flattering, and is an extreme self confidence boost.
♥ A little black dress. Black is flattering on all body types and skin colors. Find one that makes you feel fabulous, and can be dressed up or dressed down for different looks.
♥ A basic white tee and a white button down shirt. Enough said.
♥ Some well fitting jeans. This one has always been a struggle for me, as with most women. Finding a pair that is cute, fits, and flatters takes a lot of searching, and often a great deal of money. I’m not much into jeans, so finding the right pair is on the back burner for me right now.
♥ A classic pump. Expect to spend a bit on a good pair of heels. Not only should they make you look fabulous, but they must be comfortable. Try them on and walk around the shop before purchasing. If there is even the slightest bit of discomfort do not buy them. Don’t think, oh they just need to be broken in. Odds are that if they hurt now, you won’t want to spend the time breaking them in.
♥ A casual outfit. No velour track suits please. Find something that looks good enough to go to the store, but comfy enough to lounge around the house. Cotton dresses are wonderful for this. Slide on a cute pair of ballet flats, and you don’t need to look like you just rolled out of bed when you go to the market.
♥ Some flattering slacks. I like black, just because it is so easy to mix and match with everything I own. Find a pair that accentuates your good points and disguises your problem areas. These can be worn to work, on a date, or to the library, depending on what you wear with them.
♥ A trench coat. When I think of trench coats I automatically think of the goth kids in high school, that gel their hair in their face and wear too much eyeliner. I don’t mean those type of trench coats. A well tailored classic trench coat looks good on all body types. The length of the coat can elongate the torso, and the belt cinches the waist giving all women the appearance of a nice hourglass figure.
These are just the bare essentials for creating a diverse wardrobe. To continue building from their I would suggest sticking to classic, timeless pieces that don’t go in and out of style. Expect to pay a bit more for the classics, and spend less for trendy pieces that will be out of style in a few months. Accessories and jewelry can help all these different items work together to create many different looks, as well as give them your own personal flare. |

| Grey Gardens Style |
[Jan. 13th, 2008|10:14 am] |
Originally published at Indulgences. You can comment here or there. When I saw Grey Gardens for the first time I absolutely fell in love with Little Edie. I am always drawn to such slightly off and quirky characters. I loved her head wraps, the fur coats (I only wear faux for the record), and her carefree way of life, as broken as it was.
These days Grey Gardens seems to be all the rage, and the new direction of fashion. With a “remake” of the documentary in the works, a musical, and numerous fashion designers taking inspiration from the film, everyone has Grey Gardens fever! They are calling it “the Broken Socialite” look, which describes the look perfectly in my opinion.
Mary Kate Olsen did a photo shoot for Harper’s Bazaar last year inspired by Grey Gardens. Check out the beautiful colors. Her hair color is to die for in these pictures.
