Today has been such an incredibly gorgeous day. I went for a walk to the grocery store and bought supplies to make pina colada cupcakes. Tomorrow night is my big night, and I want to bring cupcakes to celebrate. The movie I have been working on is finally done and they are having a private screening for all the cast and crew. I absolutely can not wait. From what I have heard it turned out really well.

Unfortunately there won’t be any public screenings here in San Diego for a while.  The movie is being submitted to the San Diego film festival. On Wednesday they submitted it to the Hollywood film festival. In the upcoming weeks it is being submitted to several other festivals. Fingers crossed that it does good (though it should, one of their past films made it all the way to Cannes)!

Also….look! My hair is long enough to go in pig tails now, though they are a bit shrimpy. I am so, so excited about it, I haven’t been wearing any other styles lately!

Today was so nice and humid! There was hardly any sunshine, but the humidity called for my hippy dress! I seriously need more of these, they are so comfortable and lightweight….perfect for summer.

Russ and I walked down to the thrift store earlier today, where I scored these amazing shoes for only $3.50! I am so, so excited. I was in desperate need of some strappy shoes!

Just got back from a short walk to the vegan grocer. It has been so cold here for May. San Diego is considered desert climate–yet I haven’t left the house without a sweater in ages!

Today was errand day. I bought so much fresh produce for this week, I really can’t wait to start cooking! I was lucky enough to have a friend accompany me grocery shopping, and I think we both went a bit overboard buying up all the fresh fruits and vegetables.

In case you are wondering, that is MC Hammer on my shirt.

I intended for this to be a very relaxing weekend, but out of the blue an old friend from childhood called me up to say she was in town.  I can’t complain, we have been having a blast eating out for every meal, catching up, and going thrift store shopping.

I bought this skirt on Friday, and I am completely in love with it.  It is a J Crew skirt, it is wrap around, and most importantly–it is super comfy!

Saturday Night Movie: Invasion of the Body Snatchers [May. 3rd, 2008|07:34 pm]

So sorry for no movie review last weekend. My brain needed a minor break from watching B films. This week I wanted to watch a classic film, and one that I had not seen before. After a few minutes browsing recommendations online, Invasion of the Body Snatchers seemed the obvious choice. How silly that in all my years I hadn’t see this until now. I sure am glad I did–this is a great one!

invasion of the body snatchers review

After returning home from a short holiday Dr. Miles Bennell finds that a number of people in town are acting quite peculiar. Around the same time Dr. Bennell is reunited with a former flame, Becky. Becky quickly realizes that her cousin Wilma is among those acting strange. Suddenly afraid of their Uncle Ira Wilma continues to go on about how “Uncle Ira isn’t Uncle Ira anymore”. It isn’t until late one night when Miles’ friend Jack calls him over to his house, that they realize the severity of what is going on in town. When Miles and Becky arrive at Jack’s house, he shows them a body he found. A body with no life, no expressions, and completely void of emotion. However it does have an eery resemblance to Jack. They soon discover that these creatures or “pod people” are replacing the humans for which they look like, and are completely unidentifiable other than their lack of emotions. Like all other films in this genre it soon becomes a race for two people to save the entire planet from these Body Snatchers.

This movie was a lot of fun to watch. The film was pretty fast paced, and unlike a lot of old movies–kept my attention throughout the entire film! The theme of this movie reminded me a lot of I Married a Monster from Outer Space, and when I was looking at the Wikipedia page for this film, they said the same thing. If you are just getting started on the B-movies, this would be a great place to start. Now I can’t wait to see all the remakes they did of this 1956 classic!

Hi dears, I hope you don’t mind that I am taking a week off from the regular Saturday Night Movie review. It has been a long day for me today, and I am pooped!  The reviews will return next week-I promise!

Until then, enjoy this quote. It unfortunately rings close to home for many people I know and myself at times….

“If we had to tolerate in others all that we permit in ourselves, life would become completely unbearable.”

- Georges Courteline

Tuesday Tips for Feeling Fabulous [Apr. 22nd, 2008|09:08 am]

tuesday tips for feeling fabulous

Take your best friend on a play date to the petting zoo. Spend the entire day taking silly pictures together.

Find a shop or cafe where they sell fresh tea leaves. Splurge on a delicious fruit tea, and make a huge pitcher of iced tea.

Next time you are on a toll road, pay for the person behind you as well as yourself.

Go to the drug store and buy a (cheap) shade of eye shadow you don’t think would ever work on you. Spend a few hours experimenting, and make it work! Try blending it with more neutral colors if you think it is a bit too over the top.

Sign up for the Indulgences weekly newsletter. It comes out every Tuesday, and is an extra dose of fun!

Today has been a total lazy day for me. Instead of doing the normal house chores that I do on Sunday I have sat around painting and watching crappy TV, while sipping a very delicious mimosa. In fact, I probably wouldn’t have gotten out of my nightgown at all, but a friend is stopping by in a bit to join me in my painting adventures.

I can’t believe I haven’t ever posted this dress on here before. This is probably one of the most worn items I have in my closet. It is so comfy, I think I may have accidentally slept in it a time or two. This is the dress I throw on when I am sitting around like a slob, and need to go out in public.

I bought this dress about a year or so ago on a trip up to LA with my good friend Ashlee.  We casually browsed several vintage shops on Melrose, and finally came to one called Slow, which I quickly recognized from the movie “A Mighty Wind.”  As soon as I saw the store front, I knew I was going to find something in there that I loved…and I did!  This dress is one of my favorites in my collection, it is comfy, light, and perfect for our Southern California weather.

What gorgeous hot weather we have been having here in Southern California!  Today I spent the day over at my Grandma’s. We had a simple lunch drank a lot of tea, and talked about cooking.  I love my grandma!

This is the most perfect hot weather dress.  It is comfortable, and not clingy at all.  It is really easy to dress up for an evening look as well….

Chocolate Cupcakes with Mint Frosting [Apr. 13th, 2008|07:20 am]

Originally published at Indulgences. You can comment here or there.

This weekend was one full of birthdays. I had so many parties to attend, and so many cupcakes to make! Chocolate and mint cupcakes seemed to be the only way to go!

I am going to be completely honest; while I love making cupcakes, I can not make frosting for the life of me. I don’t know what my problem is! I have tried many recipes, and while some turn out okay, they just aren’t right. This time I followed a recipe from my Joy of Cooking cookbook, and it turned out not very sweet and sort of gummy in texture, so I went to town adding powdered sugar and milk, and it became much better. If any of you dolls have a recipe for frosting that is wonderful (and not too difficult!), or any pointers about making frosting, I would really appreciate hearing them.

Despite that the frosting on these cupcakes wasn’t exactly how I had envisioned them being, they turned out fabulous. The flavor was just right. Though the frosting tasted extremely strong and minty by itself, it balanced perfectly when it was paired with the light and fluffy chocolate cupcake.

mint chocolate cupcakes

2 cups white sugar
3 cups all purpose flour
2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup cocoa powder
2 cups water
1 cup canola oil
2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
1 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a large bowl sift together sugar, flour, baking soda, salt, and cocoa powder. Stir in water, oil, vinegar, and vanilla. Beat until smooth.
  3. Pour into line muffin tins and fill 2/3 full. Bake for 25 minutes or until toothpick comes out dry.

For the frosting:

  1. Follow your favorite vanilla frosting recipe. Substitute mint extract for vanilla, and add 3-4 drops of green food coloring.

Saturday Night Movie: Queen of Outer Space [Apr. 12th, 2008|04:56 pm]
[Tags|]

Originally published at Indulgences. You can comment here or there.

After I rented Cat Women of the Moon, this was one of the films that Blockbuster Online recommended to me. I was really excited about this one because it had pretty good reviews, unlike a lot of those old campy movies! When we got the film we watched it half way through before it started to skip terribly, eventually just freezing completely. After trying to clean the disc off, and having the same problem, we reported it, and had to wait almost a week to finish watching this movie!

queen of outer space zsa zsa gabor

Queen of Outer Space’s theme seems quite typical of many sci-fi films of the late 50’s and early 60’s. A ship full of men head to the moon and they crash land in some mysterious location. Naturally, the place they land is inhabited only by gorgeous women with long legs, short skirts, and large bouffants. Though many sci-fi films followed that formula, this one tops all others, not only because it stars Zsa Zsa Gabor, but because it goes above and beyond most films of that era in its usage of sexual connotation.

After crash landing in on an unknown planet, the four men aboard get out to investigate. They oldest of the crew quickly concludes that they are on the planet Venus. After a less than welcome greeting from the women of the planet, they quickly learn that the planet is ruled by the evil, masked queen, Yllana, and that the men went extinct many years before. They quickly meet Talleah (Zsa Zsa Gabor) who tells them of her plan to try and over throw the queen. After a brief stint with the queen, one of the men removes her mask to find that her face is horribly disfigured. Yllana explains that men did it to her, the radiation from wars caused her scars. The now furious queen decides that the only choice she has is to destroy the Earth, and all the men on it. The four men on Venus need to fight the evil queen for their lives, the lives of their ladies, and for every single person on Earth.

While there is a storyline somewhere in this movie, it is hard to pay attention when all you see on the screen is men and women making kissy faces at each other. While the three younger men quickly find ladies to latch onto, the oldest man in the bunch gets the pleasure of watching the three couples have a steamy make out session in a cave, while trying to hide from Queen Yllana. This movie was really worth the wait. It was highly amusing, and the picture was so clear and easy to watch. Zsa Zsa and her accent were never explained….was she from the opposite side of Venus?
